MJ-017: Post-trial work is a record-management problem as well as a legal-review process. Preserve the complete record, Statement of Trial Results, entry of judgment, submissions, rulings and forwarding history.

Controlling authorities

Working procedure

  1. Obtain or identify the certified record of trial and confirm that exhibits, motions, rulings and required attachments are included.
  2. Preserve the Statement of Trial Results and entry of judgment as separate documents.
  3. Track post-trial submissions by the accused and victim, government responses, convening-authority action where authorized, and military-judge corrections.
  4. Record service of documents and every date that can trigger appellate or correction deadlines.
  5. For public copies, distinguish the complete official record from the redacted Article 140a version.

Records to preserve

Certified record of trial; transcript; exhibits; Statement of Trial Results; entry of judgment; post-trial submissions; convening-authority documents; forwarding endorsements; appellate docket notice.

Version control

Match the offense date, procedural date, service, forum and filing date to the governing UCMJ text, MCM/R.C.M./M.R.E. version, later presidential amendments, service rule and court rule. The 2024 MCM remains the current published edition, but later operative amendments must be checked before treating it as complete current procedure.
