Getting Help, Representation & Escalation

Choose the right source of help—Military OneSource, installation services, legal assistance, accredited VA representation, or formal escalation.

Match the helper to the problem

  • Military OneSource / installation support: information, referrals, consultations, family and military-life support, and help identifying the right local program.
  • Legal assistance office: eligible personal civil legal matters and preventive legal advice; scope varies by status and installation.
  • VA-accredited VSO representative, attorney, or claims agent: VA benefit claims and decision reviews.
  • Program or personnel specialist: transactions controlled by a specific service, personnel, pay, travel, medical, or family program.
  • Supervisor / command / program manager: unresolved administrative routing or service-delivery problem where that chain has authority.
  • Formal review authority: when a written decision creates review, appeal, reconsideration, correction, or hearing rights.

Escalate with a complete record

  1. State the issue and requested outcome in one paragraph.
  2. Attach the decision, order, form, or source record that controls the issue.
  3. List prior contacts by date and result.
  4. Identify the deadline or continuing harm.
  5. Ask for the next authorized level—not merely a different phone number.
  6. Preserve the response.

For VA benefits, verify that a representative is VA-accredited. VA recognizes accredited VSO representatives, attorneys, and claims agents; a person offering general “claims help” is not automatically authorized to represent a claimant before VA.
