SGLI & VGLI Claims
Navigate SGLI and VGLI death claims, SGLV 8283, coverage verification, beneficiary designation, OSGLI processing, and claim records.
Confirm four things
- Was the policy in force on the date of death?
- What was the coverage amount?
- Who was the beneficiary of record?
- What claim form and supporting documents does OSGLI require?
VA lists SGLV 8283, Claim for Death Benefits, as the form used to claim SGLI or VGLI proceeds for a deceased policyholder. Preserve the form, death certificate, beneficiary record, coverage certificate/policy record, correspondence and payment election.
Insurance is separate from the estate
Whether proceeds become part of an estate depends on the policy beneficiary and governing rules. Treat the insurance beneficiary record as its own source document and do not assume a will changes it.
