MNG-044 · SEPARATION & RETIREMENT
Preserve Access Before Accounts Change
Preserve records and continuity of access before CAC, military email, personnel portals, myPay, TSP, VA, and contact information change.
Access preservation checklist
- Replace military-only email/phone recovery information with durable personal contact information where permitted.
- Confirm login and recovery for VA.gov, TSP My Account, myPay, milConnect and other systems you will continue to use.
- Download LES history, tax documents, orders, evaluations, awards, training, beneficiary confirmations and other records you are authorized to retain.
- Export medical/dental records through the authorized health-record process.
- Preserve DD-214/separation documents and service treatment records in more than one protected location.
- Record help-desk and account-recovery routes before CAC access ends.
- Do not copy classified, controlled, proprietary, personnel data about others, or records you are not authorized to retain.
The source record matters more than the screenshot
Where possible, download the official document or transaction confirmation rather than relying only on a portal screen. Record the system, date, creator/custodian and what the document proves so the file remains usable after access changes.
