MNG-010 · SERVING NOW & MILITARY FAMILY
Housing, BAH, BAS & Installation Support
Navigate BAH, BAS, military housing, installation support, and the records that control housing and subsistence entitlements.
BAH and BAS are different
BAH is a housing allowance for eligible members and varies with factors such as permanent-duty location, grade and dependency status. BAS is intended to offset food costs for the service member; it is not a family food allowance.
Housing gatekeepers
- Personnel/finance office: source status and allowance transaction.
- Installation housing office: government or privatized housing placement and local housing support.
- MilitaryINSTALLATIONS / Military OneSource: local office and relocation resources.
- Landlord or housing company: private lease or occupancy issues, subject to applicable law and military protections.
Pathway when the amount looks wrong
- Verify permanent-duty station and effective date.
- Verify grade and dependency status in the source personnel record.
- Compare the applicable official BAH rate.
- Compare the LES transaction and effective date.
- Preserve housing assignment, lease and move-in/move-out documents.
- Route the correction to the office that owns the incorrect source fact.
