MNG-012 · SERVING NOW & MILITARY FAMILY
Family, Dependents, DEERS & EFMP
Keep dependency and DEERS records current and navigate EFMP enrollment, assignment coordination, family support, and TRICARE connections.
Keep the dependency record current
- Marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, guardianship and death can change eligibility.
- Confirm the sponsor relationship and DEERS data after every qualifying life event.
- Do not assume that updating one contractor or installation automatically corrects every downstream system.
EFMP has three distinct functions
- Identification and enrollment of qualifying special medical or educational needs.
- Assignment coordination so documented needs are considered in assignments.
- Family support through information, referrals and non-clinical case management.
Military OneSource states that EFMP enrollment is mandatory for active-duty families with a family member who has qualifying special needs; Guard and Reserve participation can depend on service-specific guidance.
Family record to preserve
- Dependency documents and DEERS transaction proof
- EFMP enrollment and reevaluation documents
- Medical/educational needs documentation
- Assignment coordination correspondence
- TRICARE referrals, authorizations and support contacts
- School and special-education records where relevant
