Before deployment

  • Preserve orders, amendments and reporting instructions.
  • Review DEERS, ID cards, TRICARE, emergency contacts and beneficiary elections.
  • Complete required family-care planning and identify caregivers.
  • Review powers of attorney, wills and other legal arrangements with qualified legal assistance when needed.
  • Record baseline medical issues, medications, dental status and ongoing care.
  • Confirm pay, allowances, special pays and family-separation implications.

During deployment

Preserve significant orders, duty-status changes, medical encounters, injuries, exposure records, awards, evaluations, travel, pay changes and family-support communications. Do not wait until separation to reconstruct the chronology.

  2. Confirm all medical events and duty limitations are in the record.
  3. Reconcile pay and entitlements.
  4. Preserve demobilization, orders and travel documents.
